    What Is an AEC Test?

An AEC (Absolute Eosinophil Count) is a blood test that measures the number of eosinophils in your body. Eosinophils are a type of disease-fighting white blood cells (WBCs) that become active in the case of an infection, allergic disease, or drug reaction.

Eosinophil levels beyond normal can be indicative of an autoimmune disease, seasonal allergies, asthma, and parasitic infections. An abnormally low eosinophil count may be the result of intoxication from alcohol or the excessive production of cortisol. Low values of eosinophils are generally not a concern.

    AEC Test Price

Why Take the AEC Blood Test?

The AEC Test is a vital diagnostic tool that measures the number of eosinophils, a specific type of white blood cell, in the blood. Eosinophils play an essential role in the body’s immune system, becoming particularly active in response to infections, allergic diseases, or drug reactions. Elevated or decreased eosinophil levels can indicate underlying conditions that require medical attention. This test is crucial for identifying allergic disorders, autoimmune diseases, parasitic infections, and other immune system abnormalities. Additionally, it provides valuable insights into how the immune system is responding to specific triggers, helping healthcare providers develop precise treatment plans. Early detection through the AEC Test can prevent complications, improve symptom management, and enhance overall health outcomes.

Who Should Take the AEC Blood Test?

The AEC Test is recommended for individuals who experience persistent symptoms or conditions linked to abnormal eosinophil levels. This includes people diagnosed with or suspected of having:

    • Acute Hypereosinophilic Syndrome: Characterized by elevated eosinophils causing damage to organs.

    • Allergic Disorders: Such as asthma, hay fever, or severe allergic reactions.

    • Autoimmune Conditions: Involving abnormal immune system activity.

    • Parasitic and Fungal Infections: Symptoms such as gastrointestinal discomfort or skin irritation.

    • Cushing’s Disease: In its early stages, caused by excess cortisol in the blood.

    • Eczema: A chronic skin condition causing itching and inflammation.

    • Leukemia and Blood Disorders: Conditions affecting blood cell production. This test is particularly useful for patients with recurring symptoms that do not resolve with standard treatments, as it helps identify the root cause and guide further diagnostics or therapies.

Signs That You Need a AEC Blood Test

Symptoms and conditions indicating the need for an AEC Test vary widely and include both allergic and non-allergic manifestations. Early signs that warrant testing include:

    • Allergy Symptoms: Persistent sneezing, itching, watery eyes, or rashes.

    • Asthma Attacks: Frequent wheezing or difficulty breathing.

    • Skin Irritation: Chronic eczema or unexplained inflammation.

    • Gastrointestinal Discomfort: Symptoms associated with parasitic infections, such as abdominal pain or diarrhea.

    • Fatigue or Weakness: Recurring tiredness that might indicate a blood disorder or immune response.

    • Recurring Infections: Particularly parasitic or fungal infections that do not respond to initial treatments. Individuals experiencing these symptoms over an extended period should consider this test to identify potential immune or allergic disorders accurately.

    AEC Test Results Interpretation

The results of the AEC Test provide crucial insights into an individual’s immune system health.

    • Normal Range: Fewer than 500 eosinophils per microliter of blood is considered normal for adults. Children may have varying normal ranges based on age.

    • Abnormal Results:

      • Mild Eosinophilia (500–1500 cells/microliter): Often linked to allergic reactions or mild parasitic infections.

      • Moderate Eosinophilia (1500–5000 cells/microliter): May indicate autoimmune diseases, fungal infections, or more severe allergic conditions.

      • Severe Eosinophilia (>5000 cells/microliter): Suggests serious conditions such as hypereosinophilic syndrome, leukemia, or severe parasitic infections.

    • Low Eosinophil Count: Could result from alcohol intoxication or excessive cortisol production, such as in Cushing’s disease. Results should always be interpreted by a healthcare provider in the context of symptoms and medical history to ensure accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.

The AEC Test measures the number of eosinophils in the blood to diagnose and monitor conditions like allergies, parasitic infections, autoimmune disorders, and blood-related diseases.

Individuals experiencing persistent allergy symptoms, asthma, eczema, or gastrointestinal discomfort caused by parasitic infections should consider taking the test.

The test can help identify conditions such as hypereosinophilic syndrome, autoimmune diseases, allergic disorders, fungal or parasitic infections, and blood disorders like leukemia.

No, the AEC Test does not require any special preparation or fasting.

A normal AEC Test result indicates fewer than 500 eosinophils per microliter of blood for adults, with slight variations for children depending on age.

Elevated eosinophil levels suggest conditions like allergies, parasitic infections, or autoimmune disorders. Low levels may indicate alcohol intoxication or excessive cortisol production.

The test involves a simple blood draw, performed by a healthcare provider, and the results are typically available within 6 hours.

The test is minimally invasive and poses no significant risks, though mild bruising or slight discomfort at the blood draw site may occur.

Frequency depends on the condition being monitored. Discuss with your healthcare provider for personalized recommendations.

Yes, adopting healthy habits like managing allergies, maintaining hygiene, eating a balanced diet, and exercising can help regulate eosinophil levels and improve overall immune health.

What Does the AEC Test Measure?

    • The AEC Test measures the antibody titres in the blood against the bacteria that cause typhoid fever and paratyphoid fever (collectively referred to as enteric fever). It specifically detects antibodies to the O antigen (somatic antigen) and the H antigen (flagellar antigen) of Salmonella typhi and Salmonella paratyphi.

    • This test determines the body's immune response to Salmonella bacteria by observing agglutination (clumping) when the antibodies in the patient's blood react with these antigens. Elevated titres of 1:80 or more for the O antigen and 1:160 or more for the H antigen indicate an active infection. This test is particularly useful for diagnosing enteric fever in its later stages when antibody levels become detectable.

    AEC Test Procedure

The AEC blood test requires a simple blood sample. Once you schedule the test with Orange Health Labs, a trained eMedic will come to your location for home sample collection. The process includes the following steps:

    • Preparation : The eMedic will explain the procedure to you and answer any questions you may have. You will be asked to sit comfortably for the test.

    • Site Selection : The eMedic will select a vein, usually in the inner elbow area, and clean the area with an antiseptic wipe.

    • Needle Insertion : A needle will be inserted into the vein to draw blood, and you may experience a mild pinch or sting at this point.

    • Blood Collection : The necessary amount of blood will be drawn into a vial.

    • Needle Removal : After the blood is collected, the needle will be removed, and the eMedic will apply pressure with a gauze pad to stop any bleeding.

    • Bandaging : A small bandage will be placed over the puncture site for protection.

The sample collection process usually takes around just a few minutes. AEC test results are typically available within 7 hours after the sample is collected.

    AEC Test Benefits

The AEC Test offers several significant benefits:

    • Early Diagnosis: Identifies immune system abnormalities before they progress into more severe conditions.

    • Wide Diagnostic Application: Useful for diagnosing a variety of conditions, including allergies, parasitic infections, and autoimmune disorders.

    • Non-Invasive and Simple: A quick blood test that requires no special preparations and carries minimal risk.

    • Monitoring Treatment Effectiveness: Helps evaluate how well treatments for allergies or immune disorders are working.

    • Personalized Care: Provides detailed insights into eosinophil levels, allowing healthcare providers to tailor treatments effectively. By offering a comprehensive understanding of the immune response, the AEC Test plays a pivotal role in managing a broad spectrum of conditions.

How to Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle?

Adopting a healthy lifestyle can help prevent conditions linked to abnormal eosinophil levels and improve overall immune health:

    • Manage Allergies: Avoid known allergens and use prescribed medications to control symptoms.

    • The best experience I have had in the last two weeks with multiple tests booked for different family members. From the moment I contacted them till the receipt of the results and re-bookings for follow up tests, everything was fantastic. Pls note the sample taking covered early morning visit, for a patient aged 90+!! Initially I had made the big mistake of contacting another big-noise, big-ad spending Lab service provider based on a Google search of a particular test resulting in its top of page listing, and was utterly disgusted with that Labs' service. I would fully recommend Orange for anyone - possibly any test, any age patient. Thank you Orange Labs.
