SupportHow Long Should You Quarantine After Testing Positive for COVID-19?
Why Quarantine Matters After a Positive Test
Quarantine is essential to stop the spread of COVID-19. If you test positive, isolating yourself from others helps reduce transmission to family, friends, coworkers, and the public. Even if you feel fine or have mild symptoms, you can still spread the virus to others, especially those at higher risk.
Recommended Quarantine Duration (As per Guidelines)
According to current CDC and ICMR guidelines:
- If you are symptomatic: Stay in isolation for at least 5 days from the date of symptom onset. Only end isolation if your symptoms are improving and you've had no fever for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications.
- If you are asymptomatic: Isolate for 5 days from the date of your positive test. Monitor for symptoms during this time.
- After Day 5: Wear a high-quality mask around others for 5 more days to reduce the risk of spreading the virus.

When to Extend Isolation
You should continue isolating beyond 5 days if:
- You still have a fever
- Your symptoms have not improved
- You experience severe illness or are immunocompromised (consult your doctor in such cases)
- For such cases, isolation can last up to 10–20 days, depending on clinical guidance.
What to Do During Quarantine
During your isolation period, it is recommended to:
- Stay in a separate room and use a separate bathroom if possible
- Avoid contact with others, including pets
- Wear a mask when around others if you need to leave the isolation room
- Ventilate your space regularly
- Stay hydrated, eat nutritious foods, and rest
- Monitor your symptoms and seek medical advice if they worsen
Testing After Quarantine: Is It Necessary?
You are not required to retest at the end of your isolation if you are improving. However, some situations might require a negative test to end isolation (e.g., travel, work policies, healthcare settings). In such cases:
- Take an RT-PCR test or rapid test on Day 5 or later
- A negative result may allow you to end isolation sooner
- If still positive, continue masking and follow health authority advice
Returning to Normal Activities Safely
After ending isolation:
- Continue wearing a mask for 5 more days
- Wash hands frequently and avoid crowded indoor settings
- Avoid contact with high-risk individuals for at least 10 days
- Resume work, school, or social activities only when you’re symptom-free and no longer infectious
What If Symptoms Worsen?
Seek immediate medical care if you experience:
- Difficulty breathing
- Persistent chest pain
- Confusion
- Bluish lips or face
These may indicate serious complications and require urgent intervention.
Isolation for High-Risk Groups
People with weakened immune systems, underlying medical conditions, or the elderly may need to isolate longer and should consult their doctor. In some cases, repeat testing and extended quarantine are necessary to ensure full recovery and prevent complications.
