SupportAre Alcohol and Cancer Risk Connected?

Alcohol is often part of social life, but how much is too much when it comes to health? In this episode of The Orange Club Podcast, Dr. Vijay Agarwal spoke with Dhruv Gupta, Co-founder of Orange Health Labs, about the role of moderation and why heavy drinking is a major cancer risk.

What Moderation Really Means
According to Dr. Vijay Agarwal, moderate drinking carries a relatively low risk. She defines this as one small drink per day for women and up to two for men. Within these limits, the likelihood of alcohol leading to cancer is much lower compared to heavy daily consumption.
Why Heavy Drinking Changes Everything
The concern arises with regular, excessive intake. Drinking half a bottle or more each day significantly damages the liver, creating the conditions for cancer to develop. Over time, the risk increases sharply, making quantity and frequency the most important factors.
A Balanced Way to Approach Alcohol
The takeaway is not that alcohol is entirely off limits, but that awareness of limits matters. Keeping within moderate levels can reduce long-term risk, while avoiding heavy, daily drinking protects the liver and lowers the chance of cancer-related complications.
