What Is the Role of Papaya Leaf Extract in Dengue Treatment?

    hero image

When it comes to dengue, one home remedy that often comes up is papaya leaf extract. Many believe it can boost platelet counts, but how effective is it really? In our latest podcast, Dr. Roshni Jhan Ganguly spoke with Dhruv Gupta, Co-founder of Orange Health Labs, about what the science and her own experience says.

    What the Evidence Says

So far, there is no strong scientific proof that papaya leaf extract can directly increase platelet counts. Research has not established a clear mechanism or consistent effect. This means it should not be seen as a replacement for medical treatment or monitoring.

While formal evidence is limited, Dr. Ganguly notes that in practice she has seen some patients show an improvement in platelet counts after taking papaya leaf extract. Typically, people prepare it at home by blending fresh papaya leaves and consuming a spoonful on an empty stomach.

    Supportive, Not a Substitute

The key, as Dr. Ganguly emphasizes, is balance: “Papaya leaf doesn’t really do any harm, but patients must still be monitored closely. We shouldn’t rely on it blindly.”

Papaya leaf extract may provide some supportive benefit, but it should never replace proper medical care. Dengue requires careful observation, regular blood tests, and guidance from a qualified doctor. Dr. Ganguly discusses this further in Episode 10 of The Orange Club Podcast - The Truth About Monsoon Diseases: What Causes Malaria, Dengue & Chikungunya
