    What Is an FSH Test?

    The Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) test measures the level of FSH in the blood. FSH is a reproductive hormone involved in the development of eggs in women and sperm in men.

    Produced by the pituitary gland, FSH helps regulate the menstrual cycle in women and the production of sperm in men. It works in conjunction with another hormone called luteinizing hormone (LH) and plays a vital role in fertility, puberty, and hormonal balance.

    • Female (Mid-cycle peak): 5.14 – 23.4 mIU/mL

    • Female (Luteal phase): 1.38 – 9.58 mIU/mL

    • Post-menopausal women: 21.5 – 131 mIU/mL

    Male: 1.55 – 9.74 mIU/mL

    High FSH may suggest:

    • Ovarian failure or menopause in women

    • Testicular damage or genetic conditions like Klinefelter syndrome in men

    • Central precocious puberty in children

    Low FSH may be caused by:

    • Pituitary or hypothalamic disorders

    • Stress, malnutrition, or chronic illness
