What is Bicarbonate?

Bicarbonate is an electrolyte, a negatively charged ion that is used by the body to help maintain the body’s acid-base (pH) balance. It also works with other electrolytes like (sodium, potassium, and chloride) to maintain electrical neutrality at the cellular level.

When is the Bicarbonate test recommended?

It is recommended when there are:

  • Signs and symptoms of electrolyte imbalance, including headaches, confusion, nausea, vomiting, loss of energy, fatigue, drowsiness, muscle weakness, spasms or cramps, seizures, and coma.

What does it measure?

The Bicarbonate test:

  • Analyses the total amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the blood, which occurs mostly in the form of Bicarbonate (HCO3–).

  • Analysing the Bicarbonate as part of an electrolyte or metabolic panel may help diagnose an electrolyte imbalance, acidosis, or alkalosis. Acidosis and alkalosis describe the abnormal conditions that result from an imbalance in the pH of the blood caused by an excess of acid or alkali (base).

  • Bicarbonate is a chemical that acts as a buffer. It keeps the pH of the blood from becoming too acidic or too basic. Bicarbonate is not usually tested by itself. This test may be done on a blood sample taken from a vein as part of a panel of tests that look at other electrolytes.

How long will the reports take?

You will get the reports within 15 hours after the collection of the blood sample.
