    A Urine Routine test is a test that evaluates the various components of a urine sample. This simple and non-invasive test encompasses a variety of checks to detect or quantify several substances that may be present in the urine. A healthcare professional typically assesses the following broad aspects in this test:

    • Colour and Appearance: The physical examination of the urine.

    • Microscopic Findings: The microscopic examination of urine sample.

    • Chemical Findings: The analysis of various chemical components in the urine.

    A Urine Routine test can detect numerous diseases even before symptoms manifest. It is instrumental in identifying urinary tract infections (UTIs) and other problems such as kidney issues, diabetes, and liver problems. A Urine Routine test may also be conducted during a routine checkup, upon hospital admission, prior to surgery, or during pregnancy.

    Urine Complete Analysis Test Parameters

    A Urine Test consists of three components, each assessing different parameters:

    Physical Examination

    This includes an examination of urine for colour and appearance. Normal urine colour typically varies within shades of yellow, ranging from colourless or pale yellow to deep amber, depending on the concentration or dilution of the urine. Cloudy, foamy or tea/cola coloured urine may indicate health problems.

    Microscopic Examination

    This includes an examination of a small urine sample under a microscope to identify substances not normally present and invisible to the naked eye. These substances can include red blood cells (RBCs), epithelial cells, pus cells, mucus, urinary casts, amorphous phosphates, bacteria, yeasts, parasites, or crystals formed from chemicals in the urine.

    Chemical Examination

    Also referred to as a dipstick test, this examination involves using a thin plastic stick with chemical strips attached. When dipped into the urine, these strips change colour if certain substances are present at levels above normal. A dipstick test can check for a variety of parameters, including bilirubin, glucose, nitrite, leukocyte esterase, urine specific gravity, ketones, urine pH level, proteins, blood, and urobilinogen.

    Urine Complete Analysis Test Preparation

    Given below is an overview of the test's preparation:

    • Prerequisites: Fasting is not needed for the Urine Test. Just ensure to consume enough fluids before the test to produce the required amount of sample.

    • Best Time to Get Tested: Usually, the Urine Test can be done at any time of the day. But in some cases your healthcare provider may need that the urine sample be taken at your first morning void, depending on the cause for the urinalysis. Should this be the case, your provider will inform you.

    • Eligibility for Urine Test: Anyone can schedule a Urine Test for various reasons, including as part of a routine medical examination, when experiencing symptoms of issues such as diabetes or kidney disease, to monitor ongoing conditions like diabetes or kidney disease under treatment, to diagnose a UTI, upon hospital admission, or as a preparatory checkup before surgery.

    • Cautions Before Taking Urine Test: The colour of urine might change due to the intake of certain medications. Thus, it is essential to inform your doctor about any medications you are taking. Additionally, for women who are on their periods, it is important to notify a doctor prior to sample collection as menstrual blood and vaginal discharge can interfere with the accuracy of the test results.

    • During a routine medical examination, a Urine Test may be conducted to screen for early indicators of diseases such as kidney disease, diabetes, or liver disease.

    • In a person who is showing symptoms of health conditions like diabetes or kidney disease, the test aids in diagnosing the condition. The symptoms of diabetes might include increased thirst, loss of weight, blurred eyesight, hunger, weariness, and recurrent urination. A few common indications of kidney disease are loss of appetite, overall weariness and illness, headaches, dry skin and itching, nausea, and unintended weight loss.

    • For monitoring of health problems that are currently being treated such as diabetes or kidney disease.

    • To look for a UTI. Common symptoms include pain while urinating, lower abdominal or back pain and an increased urge to urinate.

    • When an individual is planning to have a surgery. In such cases, it is used in the diagnosis of kidney diseases, poorly managed diabetes, and UTIs.

    • In pregnant women, where it checks for elevated sugar levels, proteins, ketones, and bacteria in order to evaluate for bladder or kidney infections, dehydration, and preeclampsia.
