The ESR blood test measures the speed at which the red blood cells (erythrocytes) in a blood sample settle at the bottom of the test tube (sedimentation) Our lab uses automated equipment for this measurement, unlike the manual method which involves direct observation. Typically, erythrocytes settle slowly. Normally, the red blood cells settle slowly; however, in inflammatory conditions, the red blood cells typically settle more quickly to the bottom of the test tube.
Although the ESR test is not a diagnostic technique, it can assist your doctor in tracking the development of an inflammatory disease.
An ESR test is a blood test used to detect inflammation in the body. Some reasons why a doctor might order an ESR test include:
• Diagnosing Health Conditions : ESR helps in diagnosing and monitoring inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and vasculitis, which involve inflammation. If you have unexplained symptoms like fever, joint pain, or weight loss, an ESR test can help determine if inflammation is a contributing factor.
• Monitoring Disease Activity : For chronic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or inflammatory bowel disease, this test can monitor how well the disease is responding to treatment.
However, it's important to remember that while an elevated ESR can signal inflammation, it is a non-specific test and doesn't pinpoint the exact cause of the inflammation. Further testing is often needed to diagnose the specific condition.
