CertifiedLabsCalprotectin is a substance released into the gut when there is inflammation in the intestines. Measuring it in stool helps show whether digestive symptoms are due to inflammation or other causes. The faecal calprotectin test measures the level of this inflammation marker in a stool sample. Higher levels suggest inflammation in the intestines, while lower levels point away from it.
Before the Test
Tell your doctor about anti-inflammatory painkillers (NSAIDs), as these can raise calprotectin.
Avoid giving the sample during menstrual bleeding if possible.
Collect the sample in the clean container provided.
During the Test
A trained Orange Health Labs professional will collect your sample during the visit.
Follow the instructions given to you at the time of collection.
The sample is labelled and sent to the laboratory for testing.
Let the collection team know if you feel unwell during the procedure.
It is recommended:
To help tell inflammatory bowel disease apart from non-inflammatory causes of gut symptoms.
To investigate long-lasting diarrhoea or abdominal pain.
To monitor known inflammatory bowel disease and its response to treatment.
To decide whether further tests is required.
When you have digestive symptoms your doctor wants to investigate. To monitor known inflammatory bowel disease, as your doctor advises.
