This is a blood test that checks whether your immune system has ever responded to the bacteria that cause tuberculosis (TB). It does this by measuring a chemical (interferon gamma) released by your immune cells when exposed to TB proteins. The QuantiFERON-TB Gold test looks for an immune response to TB bacteria in your blood. A positive result means you have been infected with TB at some point, but it does not by itself tell whether the infection is active or dormant.

Before the Test

A positive result shows TB infection but does not confirm active disease; further tests such as a chest X-ray may be needed.

Tell your doctor about any recent vaccines and medicines that affect the immune system.

Fasting is not required.

During the Test

A trained Orange Health Labs professional will collect your sample during the visit.

Follow the instructions given to you at the time of collection.

The sample is labelled and sent to the laboratory for testing.

Let the collection team know if you feel unwell during the procedure.

It is recommended:

To check for TB infection, including the dormant (latent) form that causes no symptoms.

To screen people at higher risk, such as healthcare workers or close contacts of TB patients.

To test people before starting certain medicines that weaken the immune system.

To help assess TB when a skin test is not suitable.

Whenever your doctor wants to check for TB infection. Often used during screening before certain treatments or jobs.
