What is Prostate - Specific Antigen (Total) (PSA) test?
Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA), a protein produced by prostate gland cells, circulates through the body in two ways: either bound to other proteins or on its own. Total PSA is a useful screening method that is ordered when there is a swelling of the prostate gland (prostatic swelling). This test when taken with the Digital Rectal Examination (DRE) is more accurate in predicting prostate cancer.
Why get the Prostate - Specific Antigen (Total) (PSA) test?
The total PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) test is administered to those who show swelling of the prostate gland and helps to rule out the risk of prostate cancer. This is not a confirmatory test for prostate cancer. PSA level might be high in many non-cancerous conditions, so do consult your doctor before taking this test.
