    What is Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) Test?

    A Prostate-Specific Antigen Test also known as PSA Test measures the levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA), a protein produced by the prostate gland. The prostate is a small gland located below the bladder responsible for producing seminal fluid. Only minimal amounts of PSA enter the bloodstream unless there is an issue with the prostate gland. Elevated PSA levels in the blood can indicate prostate issues, including prostate cancer, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or inflammation (prostatitis). Hence, a PSA test is used to screen people for prostate cancer or monitor those diagnosed with it. While increased PSA levels may indicate cancer, other factors like prostate size, age, or medical conditions can also influence levels. To ensure accurate diagnosis, doctors often use the PSA test along with digital rectal exams (DRE) or biopsies to give a complete overview of your prostate health.

    • Avoid vigorous exercise (especially bicycling) for 48 hours, as it can elevate PSA levels.

    • Refrain from sexual activity, (including masturbation) for 48 hours, as ejaculation can raise PSA levels.
