What is an Ammonia (NH3) Plasma test?
This test investigates the level of ammonia in your blood. Ammonia (NH3) is produced by cells throughout the body, especially in the intestines, liver, and kidneys. And most of the ammonia produced in the body is used by the liver to produce urea. Urea is also a waste product but much less toxic than ammonia. Ammonia is especially toxic to the brain. It can cause confusion, low energy, and sometimes a coma.
When is the Ammonia (NH3) Plasma test recommended?
It is recommended:An ammonia blood test may be requested on newborns when they are irritable, vomiting, tired, and have seizures within the first few days of the birth. It may be analysed when the child develops these symptoms about a week after a viral illness, such as the flu or cold, and the doctor suspects that the child might have Reye’s syndrome. If adults experience mental changes, disorientation, sleepiness, or lapse into a coma, the ammonia blood test may be requested to help investigate the cause of the change in consciousness. In patients with stable liver disease, an ammonia blood test may be requested, among other things, when the condition of a patient suddenly takes a turn for the worse and becomes more acutely ill.
What does it measure?
The Ammonia (NH3) Plasma test measures:It’s a simple blood test that allows your doctor to measure how much ammonia is in your blood.A significantly increased level of ammonia in the blood is an indication that your body is not effectively processing and eliminating the ammonia which may be the cause of your signs and symptoms. In children and adults, increased ammonia levels might indicate severe liver or kidney damage that has affected the body’s ability to clear ammonia and that the brain might be affected. The normal blood ammonia level means that your signs and symptoms are due to a cause other than excess ammonia. However, the normal levels of ammonia do not rule out hepatic encephalopathy.Other than that, the breakdown products can contribute to changes in mental functions and consciousness, and brain levels of ammonia may be much higher than blood levels. The decreased level of ammonia may be seen with some types of hypertension, such as essential (high blood pressure of unknown cause) and malignant (very high blood pressure that occurs suddenly and quickly).
