What is Aspartate Aminotransferase AST (SGOT) test?
The SGOT/AST is a liver enzyme that is usually measured to evaluate liver activity. It is also secreted by the heart and kidneys to a lesser extent. When liver cells are damaged, AST/SGOT leaks out into the bloodstream, elevating AST/SGOT levels in the blood. Mild to moderate elevations of AST/SGOT is seen in chronic liver diseases and short huge elevations seen in acute liver injury.
