What is Dengue Fever NS1 Antigen test?
Dengue fever is a viral infection transmitted to humans by mosquitoes that live in tropical and subtropical climates and carry the virus. Blood testing detects the dengue virus or antibodies produced in response to dengue infection. Dengue fever testing is used to determine whether a person with signs and symptoms and recent potential exposure has been infected with the dengue virus
What happens during this test?
Testing may be ordered when individuals have signs and symptoms associated with dengue following travel to tropical locations where the dengue virus is present. Detection of the dengue virus(DV) nonstructural protein 1 (NS1) has emerged as an alternative biomarker to both serologic and molecular-based techniques for the diagnosis of acute DV infection. NS1 antigen anemia is detectable within 24 hours and up to 9 days following symptoms onset. Concurrent evaluation for the NS1 antigen alongside testing for IgM- and IgG-class antibodies to DV (DENGM) provides the optimal diagnostic potential for both early and late dengue disease.
