What is HIV 1 & 2 Antibodies test?
It is a blood test that checks for the protein the body makes in response to the HIV infection after 2-8 Weeks. It is also called immunoassay or the ELISA test. The test looks for HIV-1 antibodies in your blood. The HIV virus is transmitted by sexual contact, by exposure to infected blood or blood products, or from an infected mother to her fetus or infant.
What happens during this test?
The only way to know if there is an HIV infection is to get an HIV test. Women planning a pregnancy, or those who are already pregnant are recommended to take this test, it gives them an opportunity to prevent transmission of the virus to their child as well. Generally, everyone between the ages of 13 and 64 should get tested for HIV at least once as part of routine health care. If a person has shared injectable needles with others, this test is recommended.
