    Lipoprotein (a), written as Lp(a), is a special type of cholesterol‑carrying particle in the blood. High levels are largely determined by your genes and are linked to a higher risk of heart disease and stroke, independent of regular cholesterol levels.     Fasting is often preferred if Lp(a) is done along with a full lipid profile, but not strictly necessary for Lp(a) alone (follow your lab/doctor’s instructions).

    Lifestyle changes (diet, exercise, no smoking) are still essential even though Lp(a) is genetic; lowering overall heart risk is the main goal.
