What is Packed Cell Volume (Hematocrit) (PCV) test?

Packed Cell Volume (PCV) is an indirect estimate of the red blood cell (RBC) mass of an individual. It is an integral assessment of the Complete Blood Count (CBC) test and is computed by automated analyzers. A low level of PCV could indicate anemia, long-term illnesses, and blood loss. A high level could indicate dehydration, diseases of the lung and the heart, and polycythemia vera, a rare disease.

What happens during this test?

Packed Cell Volume (PCV) provides information on the proportion of Red Blood Cells (RBCs) in the blood, which carry oxygen throughout the body. This test is very useful in those who have blood loss or fluid loss due to any reason. It is an integral prognostic marker to assess treatment response.
