What is Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) test?

FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone) is a reproductive hormone produced by the pituitary gland, regulated by GnRH (Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone) and feedback by gonadal steroid hormones. It is present in both men and women; stimulating follicular growth in women and seminiferous tubules and testicular growth in men. FSH values are present in higher levels in women, even after they reach menopause.

Why get the Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) test?

The FSH test would be used to understand why there is a loss of periods, and to rule out the primary and secondary causes of amenorrhea. Doctors/gynecologists usually order this test to assess fertility in women. It is used in the diagnosis and management of infertility.
