What is Insulin (Fasting) test?
Fasting Serum insulin levels provide information about a person's insulin sensitivity, but not about reductions in either beta-cell mass or function. Insulin in the blood and blood glucose must be measured at the same time to evaluate insulin secretion properly. Patients with type 2 diabetes have higher fasting Serum insulin concentrations than normal subjects, suggesting that they are over secreting insulin. Obese subjects with normal fasting blood glucose levels have much higher fasting Serum insulin concentrations than lean subjects with similar blood glucose concentrations suggesting a degree of insulin resistance.
Why get the Insulin (Fasting) test?
Diabetes is a serious lifestyle disease, which can be managed effectively through physical activity, diet, and appropriate use of insulin and oral medications to lower blood sugar levels. Reducing risks of heart diseases such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and tobacco use is also an integral part of managing diabetes. People with diabetes are at increased risk of serious health complications including vision loss, heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, amputation of toes, feet, or legs, and premature death.
