What is the Packed cell volume (Hematocrit) test ?

The Packed Cell Volume (PCV), also known as hematocrit test, is performed to measure the proportion of blood made up of erythrocytes or red blood cells (RBCs). The purpose of a hematocrit test is to evaluates the percentage of the blood that is made up of red blood cells. This measurement identifies the viscosity, or thickness, of the blood and depends on the size and number of RBCs in the blood sample. Hematocrit is most frequently evaluated as a part of an entire blood count, which also includes measurements of red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and hemoglobin.

When is a Packed cell volume (Hematocrit) test recommended?

What does it measure?

Packed cell volume(PCV) hematocrit measures the proportion of the blood that is composed of red blood cells and is expressed as a percentage.

  • Red blood cells(RBCs) are critical for the distribution of oxygen to the body’s cells. Once the oxygen is used by cells to produce energy, RBCs will transport the waste product, carbon dioxide, from the cells back to the lungs.

  • Packed cell volume (hematocrit) levels can be affected by an increased or decreased in the number of red blood cells, and by changes in the other components of the blood. Because hematocrit measures the share of red blood cells within the blood, relative increases or decreases in other blood components, like plasma or white blood cells, can cause abnormal hematocrit results even if the red blood cell count is normal.
