The CA-125 test measures the level of a specific protein, Cancer Antigen 125, in the blood. This protein can act as a tumour marker and is often elevated in cases of ovarian cancer. The ovaries, which are female reproductive organs responsible for storing and releasing eggs and producing hormones, are one source of CA-125. It is also produced by the lining cells of other organs, such as the fallopian tubes and uterus. Elevated CA-125 levels can be found in a variety of cancers and other health conditions. This test is particularly useful for screening postmenopausal women who are at an increased risk of ovarian cancer due to family history or genetic predisposition. Additionally, it is used to evaluate individuals with symptoms that could suggest ovarian cancer. The CA-125 test is especially valuable for monitoring the progress of ovarian cancer treatment and detecting any recurrence after treatment.

If you reside in Pune and have risk factors or symptoms suggestive of ovarian cancer, your doctor may recommend a CA-125 test, which can be conveniently performed at home to monitor your health or assess your risk.

Here is how to prepare for a Cancer Antigen 125 test at home:

Pre-requisites

Fasting is not necessary before taking the CA-125 test.

Best Time to Get Tested

The CA-125 test can be conducted at any time during the day.

Who Should Get a Cancer Antigen 125 (CA-125) Test

This test is recommended for diagnosing ovarian cancer in women with symptoms or risk factors such as a family history or genetic predisposition. It is also useful for monitoring women who have already been diagnosed with ovarian cancer and are receiving treatment. After treatment, the test can be performed regularly to check for cancer recurrence.

Cautions Before Taking a Cancer Antigen 125 (CA-125) Test

Keep in mind that elevated CA-125 levels can occur in non-cancerous conditions like pregnancy, menstruation, and fibroids. Consult your doctor about any precautions you should take before the test.

A CA-125 test is a valuable tool in ovarian cancer management and risk assessment. Here’s why you might need this test:

• Evaluating Pelvic Lumps : When a suspicious lump is detected in the pelvic area through imaging tests, such as ultrasound, CA-125 levels can help determine if the lump might be ovarian cancer.

• High-Risk Assessment

• • Individuals with a family history of ovarian, breast, or colorectal cancer.

  • Those with genetic mutations, such as BRCA1 or BRCA2.

  • Individuals with hereditary conditions like Lynch syndrome that increase cancer risk.

  • Anyone with a history of ovarian, breast, colorectal, or uterine cancer.

• Monitoring Treatment : If you’ve been diagnosed with ovarian cancer, CA-125 tests are performed regularly during treatment to track its effectiveness. A drop in CA-125 levels generally suggests that the treatment is working.

• Checking for Recurrence : After cancer treatment, CA-125 levels might be checked periodically, whether every few months or annually, to see if the cancer has returned.

Given that elevated CA-125 levels can be found in other conditions, the test is typically used alongside other diagnostic tools to confirm a diagnosis.
