This test checks how your body handles sugar. You drink a measured sweet liquid containing 75 grams of glucose, and a blood sample is taken 1 hour later to see how your blood sugar responds. The 75 gram glucose challenge test (1 hour) measures your blood sugar 1 hour after the sweet drink. It is often used as part of testing for diabetes, including gestational diabetes in pregnancy.

Before the Test

Follow fasting instructions exactly if asked to fast, usually 8 to 10 hours with only water.

Tell your doctor if you feel unwell or cannot keep the drink down.

Stay seated and avoid eating, smoking, or heavy activity during the test.

During the Test

A trained Orange Health Labs professional will collect your sample during the visit.

Follow the instructions given to you at the time of collection.

The sample is labelled and sent to the laboratory for testing.

Let the collection team know if you feel unwell during the procedure.

To screen for or diagnose diabetes.

To check for gestational diabetes during pregnancy.

To investigate borderline blood sugar results.

To assess how your body processes sugar.

Usually done in the morning, often after an overnight fast, as your doctor instructs. In pregnancy, in the week range your doctor recommends.
