A PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) Test determines the level of PSA, a protein produced by the prostate gland, which is responsible for generating seminal fluid. The prostate is located beneath the bladder, and in healthy individuals, only small amounts of PSA circulate in the bloodstream.

When the prostate is affected by conditions such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), prostate cancer, or prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate), PSA levels may rise. This test is widely used for early detection of prostate cancer or for monitoring existing cases. However, other factors like age, prostate size, and medical history can also affect PSA levels, which is why doctors often recommend additional testing such as digital rectal exams (DRE) or biopsies.

If you're in Pune and looking to stay proactive about your prostate health, a PSA test is an efficient and easily accessible option for identifying potential issues early.

Before scheduling a Prostate-Specific Antigen Test in Pune, consider the following:

• Prerequisites

No fasting is required before the PSA test.

• Best Time to Get Tested

A PSA test at home can be scheduled at any time during the day.

• Who Should Get a PSA Test?

Men at higher risk of prostate cancer are usually advised to undergo PSA screening. You might need this test if:

• There is a family history of prostate cancer, especially in close relatives like your father or brother.

• You carry certain genetic mutations that increase the risk of prostate cancer.

• You are between 40 and 45 years old and at higher risk for the disease.

In addition, screening is recommended if you exhibit symptoms such as:

• Blood in the urine

• Frequent or urgent urination, or waking frequently at night to urinate

• Difficulty maintaining or achieving an erection.

• Cautions Before Taking a PSA Test

For the best results, it’s recommended to follow these precautions for two days before testing:

• Avoid sexual activity, including ejaculation or masturbation, which can temporarily raise PSA levels.

• Refrain from intense physical activity, particularly cycling, which may artificially elevate PSA levels.

The PSA Test is useful for several purposes:

• Cancer Screening: A major reason for taking the PSA test is to screen for prostate cancer early, especially in individuals with a family history or those of advanced age. Early detection can support prompt treatment and better outcomes.

• Diagnosis of Symptoms: If you're experiencing symptoms like changes in urination or pelvic discomfort, the PSA test helps determine if these are related to prostate conditions.

• Monitoring Treatment: For those already undergoing treatment for prostate cancer, the test tracks PSA levels over time, providing a measure of treatment effectiveness.

• Prostate Health Assessment: Regular PSA testing allows for the monitoring of prostate health over time, helping catch issues early before they become severe.
