CertifiedLabsPSA is a protein made by the prostate gland in men. It travels in the blood in two forms: bound to other proteins and free. The free PSA test measures the unbound portion, which helps refine the picture when total PSA is borderline. The free PSA blood test measures the unbound form of PSA. It is usually read together with total PSA to help judge how likely a raised PSA is due to cancer versus a non-cancer prostate condition.
Before the Test
Tell your doctor about recent activities that can raise PSA, such as cycling, a recent prostate examination, or urinary procedures.
Mention all medicines, including any for prostate enlargement.
Fasting is not required.
During the Test
A trained Orange Health Labs professional will collect your sample during the visit.
Follow the instructions given to you at the time of collection.
The sample is labelled and sent to the laboratory for testing.
Let the collection team know if you feel unwell during the procedure.
It is recommended:
To 1. Add information when total PSA is mildly or moderately raised.
To 2. Help to decide whether a prostate biopsy is needed.
To 3. Tell to differentiate non-cancer prostate enlargement from malignant conditions where closer monitoring is required.
To 4. Support overall prostate assessment in men.
Usually done along with a total PSA test, as your doctor advises. Often delayed for a short time after activities or procedures that can raise PSA, as advised.
