This test looks for hidden (occult) blood in the stool that is not visible to the naked eye. Small amounts of blood can be an early warning sign of problems in the digestive tract. The stool occult blood test checks a stool sample for traces of blood. It is often used as a simple screening test for bleeding in the bowel, including early signs of bowel cancer.

Before the Test

Follow any diet or medicine instructions your lab gives, as some foods and medicines can affect certain versions of this test.

Avoid the test during menstrual bleeding or if you have bleeding piles, if possible.

Collect the sample in the clean container provided.

During the Test

A trained Orange Health Labs professional will collect your sample during the visit.

Follow the instructions given to you at the time of collection.

The sample is labelled and sent to the laboratory for testing.

Let the collection team know if you feel unwell during the procedure.

It is recommended:

To screen for bowel (colon) cancer, often in people over a certain age.

To look for hidden bleeding in the stomach or intestines.

To help find the cause of unexplained anaemia.

To investigate digestive symptoms.

As part of routine screening at the age and interval your doctor recommends. Whenever hidden bleeding is suspected.
