    What Is an RT-PCR Test?

    The RT-PCR (Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction) test is a highly sensitive molecular diagnostic test used to detect an active infection with SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19.

    This test identifies specific genetic material (RNA) of the virus by amplifying it through multiple cycles to ensure even trace amounts can be detected. RT-PCR is considered a gold standard method for confirming COVID-19 infection due to its high accuracy.

    Samples are commonly collected via a nasal or throat swab. Some test kits also support saliva samples. At-home test kits are available, allowing users to self-collect and send samples to a lab, or use rapid devices that provide results without lab processing.

    RT-PCR Test Preparation

    Fasting is not required for the RT-PCR test. However, a government-issued ID card (preferably Aadhar) is mandatory for identity verification.

    Who Should Get This Test?

    • Individuals with COVID-19 symptoms

    • Those exposed to a confirmed COVID-19 case

    • Travelers or patients undergoing procedures requiring pre-test clearance

    • A swab will be inserted into your nose or throat to collect a sample

    • You may feel slight discomfort or a gag reflex, but the procedure is brief

    • Your sample is sealed and sent to a lab

    • Results are usually shared within 2 days via email or WhatsApp

    Why Take an RT-PCR Test?

    Your healthcare provider may recommend an RT-PCR test for COVID-19 if you exhibit symptoms or have been exposed to the virus.

    Common symptoms:

    • Fever or chills

    • Cough or sore throat

    • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing

    • Fatigue and muscle aches

    • Loss of taste or smell

    • Headache or congestion

    • Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea

    RT-PCR tests are also advised for:

    • Pre-travel screening

    • Hospital admissions or surgeries

    • Return-to-work clearance

    • Contact tracing or exposure events

    If symptomatic, consult your healthcare provider even if you are vaccinated, as breakthrough infections are possible.

    RT-PCR Test Results & Interpretation

    RT-PCR results will indicate whether SARS-CoV-2 genetic material was detected in your sample.

    Possible results include:

    Positive – You currently have an active COVID-19 infection. Isolate immediately, follow medical guidance, and notify close contacts.

    Negative – No viral RNA was detected. However, this does not rule out infection, especially if exposure was recent or symptoms persist.

    A negative result may be due to:

    • Early testing post-exposure

    • Low viral load

    • Improper sample collection

    Even if you test negative, you may become infected later. Continue to follow preventive measures like mask-wearing, physical distancing, and hand hygiene.

    If symptoms persist after a negative result, consult your doctor for repeat testing or additional evaluations. Related tests may include:

    • Anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibody test

    • Rapid antigen test (RAT)

    • My experience with Orange Helth Labs has been good so far. They keep up the time , for collecting the sample, analysing and in giving the reports. It's great help, especially for those who can't move out from their homes for getting the samples analysed. Thier charges for testing is also are comparable to any good labs.

    • Good experience everytime except one where phlebotomist didn't prick correctly. My wife had much pain even after few days and it looked like some clot had happened. But it was one in almost 20 visits. I would still recommend. One suggestion to Orange would be to keep Lithium tests within a day so we could get test results faster

    • My experience with orange labs was really smooth. Earlier I booked for night but then someone called and asked about when did I eat and since I had to be in fast for past 8 hrs before sample collection, we rescheduled it to next morning.
