    Is Gluten Really the Enemy?

    hero image

In this episode of The Orange Club Podcast, Dietician Nidhi Nigam breaks down the growing conversation around gluten intolerance and gluten sensitivity. While “gluten-free” has become a trend, she explains why it’s important to understand what’s really happening in your body before cutting out gluten altogether.

Watch the clip here: Is Gluten Really the Enemy?

Gluten Intolerance vs. Gluten Sensitivity: What’s the Difference?

The first step is knowing the difference between two very different conditions. Gluten intolerance, also known as celiac disease, is an autoimmune disorder. In this condition, eating gluten triggers an immune reaction that damages the lining of the small intestine. It needs medical attention and long-term dietary management.

Gluten sensitivity, on the other hand, is less severe but still affects how your body reacts to gluten. You may not have celiac disease, but your system could respond negatively showing signs like nausea, bloating, or rashes.

When Your Body Starts Sending Signals

If you often feel uneasy after eating foods like bread, pasta, or chapati, it might be worth listening to your body. Nidhi explains that symptoms such as bloating, nausea, or irregular bowel movements can be signs of gluten sensitivity. The best approach is not panic, but observation.

The 21-Day Rule for Gluten Sensitivity

Instead of rushing into a permanent gluten-free diet, Nidhi suggests a 21-day elimination trial. Stop consuming gluten for three weeks and watch how your body responds. If your symptoms ease or disappear, that’s a clear signal your system needs a break. This period gives your gut time to heal from inflammation that may have built up over time.

    Reintroducing Gluten the Right Way

After the 21 days, reintroduce gluten slowly and monitor how your body reacts. “If the body responds positively,” Nidhi says, “you know it’s not intolerance, just sensitivity.” This simple reset helps you understand what your body truly needs, without following food fads or unnecessary restrictions.

    Listen, Don’t Label

Not every stomach ache means you’re gluten intolerant. The key, Nidhi emphasizes, is to listen to your body before labeling foods as harmful. Understanding your unique response to food helps you make informed choices that actually work for your health, not just for the trend.
