When Junk Becomes a Reward: How Modern Habits Are Hurting Kids’ Health

    hero image

In this episode of The Orange Club Podcast, Dietician Nidhi Nigam talks about a growing concern that many parents may not realize until it is too late. Changing lifestyles and eating habits are causing health problems in children and teenagers that were once only seen in adults. The diseases that used to appear after 40 are now showing up as early as 14.

The Dangerous Habit of Using Food as a Reward

Many parents today use food to motivate or comfort their children. As Nidhi points out, parents often say, “My child finishes homework on time or gets good marks, then he gets a pizza.” This creates an emotional connection between food and reward. Over time, children begin to see unhealthy food as something they deserve rather than something to limit.

Busy Parents and the Temptation of Convenience

With packed schedules, parents often rely on easy fixes to keep their kids happy. These quick choices, like fried snacks or instant noodles, may save time but come with a hidden cost. Unhealthy foods are becoming a regular part of daily meals, replacing balanced nutrition with convenience and habit.

A Generation That Moves Less and Eats More

“The kids of today’s generation only do finger exercise,” says Nidhi. Physical play has been replaced by screens, and sedentary lifestyles are now the norm. Combined with frequent consumption of high-calorie, low-nutrient foods, this has created a worrying pattern. Conditions such as obesity, vitamin deficiencies, and even early diabetes are becoming increasingly common among children.

    Building Healthier Habits Early

This issue goes beyond food choices. It is about teaching children how to think about health. Encouraging outdoor activity, limiting junk food, and creating balanced mealtime routines can make a huge difference. When healthy behavior starts early, it becomes a natural part of growing up.
