SupportHow Long Does It Take to Recover from Malaria?

When diagnosed with malaria, one of the first questions people ask is how long recovery will take. While there is no single answer, doctors agree that recovery is usually steady when the illness is treated correctly. In our latest podcast, Dr. Roshni Jhan Ganguly explained to Dhruv Gupta, Co-founder of Orange Health Labs, what to expect during this period.

For uncomplicated malaria, most people begin to feel better within 7–10 days. More severe cases may take longer, with recovery stretching up to 2–3 weeks. The exact timeline depends on the type of infection and how the body responds to treatment.
Even after the fever subsides, it’s common to experience tiredness and fatigue as the body restores strength. Some people also notice a bitter or nauseous taste in the mouth, a temporary effect of the medication that fades once treatment is completed.
Takeaway
Malaria recovery is generally effective, though it can take time for energy levels to fully return. Adequate rest, hydration, and follow-up with your doctor help ensure a smooth recovery.
