Can Pineapple Really Help with Allergies?

    hero image

Pineapple is often praised as more than just a tropical fruit. Some believe it can also play a role in easing allergy symptoms. In our latest podcast, Dr. Gurmeet Soni Bhalla spoke with Dhruv Gupta, Co-founder of Orange Health Labs, about what pineapple can and cannot do when it comes to allergies.

Bromelain: The Enzyme Behind the Buzz

Pineapple contains bromelain, a natural enzyme known for its anti-inflammatory and antihistamine-like properties. This means it may help the body respond better to inflammation and could offer mild support for allergy-related discomforts.

Why Pineapple Is Not a Perfect Solution

Dr. Bhalla cautions that the benefits of bromelain are not a guarantee. While it may provide some relief, pineapple is not a substitute for medical treatment. Moreover, it can also cause reactions in certain individuals.

    When Pineapple Becomes the Trigger

Interestingly, some people experience itching in the throat or ears after eating pineapple. Dr. Bhalla explains that this can sometimes indicate an allergy — not necessarily to pineapple itself, but possibly to related allergens like grass pollens. In such cases, pineapple might worsen symptoms rather than help.
