    Why Parents Should Be Strict About Sugar

    Sugar is one of the most debated parts of a child’s diet. While often seen as a harmless treat, the habits children form early on can shape their food choices well into adulthood. In our latest podcast, Dr. Gurmeet Soni Bhalla spoke with Dhruv Gupta, Co-founder of Orange Health Labs, about why parents should set clear boundaries around sugar.

    Why Calling Sugar a ‘Treat’ Sets the Wrong Habit

    Dr. Bhalla explains that when sugar is consistently offered as a “treat,” children begin to associate it with reward and comfort. Over time, this can create strong preferences and cravings that are harder to undo later in life. In many ways, the choices parents make today lay the foundation for their child’s lifelong relationship with food.

    What Too Much Sugar Really Does to Kids

    Large doses of sugar can affect more than just long-term health. According to Dr. Bala, too much sugar can suppress the satiety centre, the body’s natural ability to feel full. This can lead to sudden energy crashes, mood swings, and tantrums, making everyday routines harder for both parents and children.

    How to Let Kids Enjoy Sugar Without the Struggle Later

    Dr. Bhalla suggests limiting sugary foods as much as possible. If parents do allow them, it’s best to keep portions very small and offer them after a proper meal rather than as a standalone snack. Even a small square of chocolate at the end of the day, she notes, is a better alternative than building a habit of frequent treats.
