CertifiedLabsWhat Is a CA 72.4, Gastric Cancer Marker Test?
The CA 72.4 Gastric Marker test is a blood test used to assess the levels of Cancer Antigen 72.4 (CA 72.4), an antigen predominantly linked to gastric cancer (GC). Gastric cancer is one of the most aggressive and fatal cancers worldwide, often diagnosed in later stages due to the lack of early symptoms and reliable screening methods.
While upper gastrointestinal endoscopy with biopsy is the gold standard for diagnosing gastric cancer, it is invasive, costly, and not practical for routine monitoring. Therefore, non-invasive tumour markers like CA 72.4 are used to detect and monitor the development of gastric cancer. Studies have indicated that CA 72.4 provides higher diagnostic accuracy than other commonly used tumour markers, such as CEA (carcinoembryonic antigen) and CA 19-9, for gastric cancer detection. The test is also important for determining whether patients are suitable candidates for tumour resection surgery.
For residents of Delhi, scheduling a CA 72.4 test at home offers a convenient and hassle-free approach to ensuring timely diagnosis and monitoring of gastric cancer.
CA 72.4, Gastric Cancer Marker Test Parameters
The CA 72.4 test is used to measure the levels of the gastric cancer marker CA 72.4 in the bloodstream.
CA 72.4, also known as Tumour-Associated Antigen 72 (TAG-72), is a glycoprotein that appears in high concentrations on the surface of a range of adenocarcinomas, including those of the gastric, colorectal, ovarian, and breast cancers. Its levels are generally low in healthy individuals, but they tend to rise markedly in patients with malignant tumours. Elevated CA 72.4 levels are commonly associated with gastric cancer, especially during its advanced stages.
CA 72.4, Gastric Cancer Marker Test Preparation
To prepare for the CA 72.4 test at home, here are the testing guidelines:
Prerequisites Fasting is not necessary before the CA 72.4 Gastric Cancer Marker test.
Best Time to Get Tested You can schedule the CA 72.4 test at any time during the day if you are seeking diagnosis or monitoring of gastric cancer.
Who Should Get a CA 72.4 Test? The CA 72.4 test is recommended for individuals being tested for gastric cancer or other adenocarcinomas, those who require postoperative monitoring, and patients undergoing chemotherapy to assess the response to treatment. It may also be advised for people at increased risk of gastric cancer due to family history, poor lifestyle choices, or Helicobacter pylori infection.
Cautions Before Taking a CA 72.4 Test There are no special precautions to consider before taking the test.
Why Take the CA 72.4, Gastric Cancer Marker Test?
The CA 72.4 test plays a vital role for individuals at risk of or diagnosed with gastric cancer. It is essential for the following reasons:
Early Detection of Gastric Cancer : Although it is not a primary screening method, CA 72.4 can aid in the early detection of gastric cancer, particularly for high-risk individuals.
Assessing Disease Progression : The test helps evaluate tumour burden and anticipate metastasis (the spread of cancer to other body areas) before surgery.
Postoperative Monitoring : It is useful for monitoring the recurrence of the tumour following surgery.
Evaluating Treatment Response : The test is also performed to assess how well chemotherapy is working and guides treatment decisions.
Regular CA 72.4 testing, alongside imaging and clinical evaluations, helps monitor the progression of the disease, treatment responses, and potential recurrence of gastric cancer and other adenocarcinomas.
