    The Fasting Blood Sugar Test is a blood test that measures the blood sugar level in the body after at least 8 hours of fasting without food or water. The normal levels of fasting blood glucose in adult men and women are 70-110 mg/dl.

    Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS) Test Preparation

    Fasting is required for a fasting blood sugar test. Do not eat or drink anything other than water for 8–12 hours before the test.

    FBS Test Procedure

    You can expect the experience the following during a blood test or blood draw:

    • You will have to sit comfortably on the chair, and a healthcare provider will check your arms for an easily accessible vein. This is the inner part of your arm on the other side of your elbow.

    • Once they have located a vein, they will clean and disinfect the area with an alcohol swab.

    • Then they will insert a small needle into your vein to draw a blood sample. This might feel like a small pinch.

    • After they have inserted the needle, the required amount of blood will be collected in a test tube.

    • Once they have collected enough blood to test, they’ll remove the needle and hold a cotton ball or gauze on the site to stop any bleeding.

    • They will put a band-aid over the pricked site, and the blood collection is finished.

    • This process takes less than five minutes.

    For a person who is non-diabetic, fasting blood sugar levels are generally between 70 to 100 mg/dL depending on the time of day and the last time they ate dinner.

    Fasting blood sugar values of 110 are on the higher side of normal. However, fasting blood sugar alone is not sufficient to diagnose prediabetes or diabetes.

    A normal blood sugar value is less than 140 mg/dL. A value of more than 200 mg/dL after two hours indicates diabetes. Values between 140 - 199 mg/dL indicate prediabetes.

    A fasting blood sugar value if less than 100 mg/dL is considered normal. A fasting sugar of 100 to 125 mg/dL is considered prediabetes. If it is 126 mg/dL or higher in two separate tests, it is considered diabetes.

    Prediabetes does not usually show any signs or symptoms. One of the possible signs of prediabetes is darkened skin on certain parts of the body. The affected areas may include the neck, armpits, and groin.
