For many women, pregnancy is an integral part of their lives - a source of great joy and excitement. However, sometimes, not knowing and a lack of certainty can also be daunting, especially for first-time mothers or those trying to conceive.

Understanding the science behind these processes, as well as the various medical tests and interventions available, can be critical in helping women make informed decisions about their reproductive health. Our blog sheds light on the Beta hCG test. Beta hCG full form is (Beta-Human Chorionic Gonadotropins). Other names of beta-hCG test are Human Chorionic Gonadotropin Test, Quantitative hCG Test, Serum hCG Test, Pregnancy Hormone Test, Serial beta HCG, Repeat quantitative beta HCG, Human chorionic gonadotropin blood test - quantitative, Beta-HCG blood test - quantitative, Pregnancy test - blood - quantitative

What is a Beta hCG Test?

The beta hCG test, or beta-human chorionic gonadotropin test, is a blood test that measures the level of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in the body. Beta human chorionic gonadotropin is a hormone produced by the placenta after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus. It can be detected in the blood or urine of pregnant women.

    Types of Beta hCG testing

There are two types of hCG testing: hCG Urine test & hCG blood test

    • Qualitative testing: Also known as the urine pregnancy test, the qualitative beta hCG test is the over-the-counter pregnancy test that only indicates whether you are pregnant.
    • Quantitative testing: It measures the amount of the hormone present in the blood. A blood sample will be collected from your vein and sent to the laboratory to check the blood levels of beta hCG.

A doctor usually orders a beta hCG blood test to confirm pregnancy after a positive urine pregnancy test.

Why is Beta hCG test Performed?

Beta hCG means, a test that measures the amount of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in the blood. The Beta hCG test is primarily used for confirming pregnancy. HCG appears in the blood and urine of pregnant women as early as 10 days after conception. Quantitative HCG measurement helps determine the exact age of the fetus. It can also assist in the diagnosis of abnormal pregnancies, such as ectopic pregnancies, gestational trophoblastic disease, molar pregnancies, and possible miscarriages.

Secondary uses of the beta hCG test include evaluating cancers like lung, breast, ovarian, or uterine cancers, as well as non-cancerous conditions like ulcers, inflammatory bowel disease, and cirrhosis. Additionally, it is used as part of a screening test for Down syndrome.

When to do Beta hCG test?

The best time to conduct Beta hCG test in case of a natural pregnancy, is from the day following the expected first day of menstruation. Specifically, this is on day 14 after ovulation in a regular cycle of 28 days. Conducting the test at this point provides a reliable window for detecting the presence of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a hormone produced by the placenta following the implantation of a fertilized egg. This timeframe ensures accurate results and is commonly recommended for confirming pregnancy in a natural cycle scenario.

    Beta hCG test normal range

Normal levels of hCG in men and premenopausal women range from 0.02 to 0.8 IU/L.
