    Can Lifelong Allergies Go Away?

    hero image

“Allergies aren’t always a lifelong sentence

Dr. Gurmeet Bhalla, Allergist explains in The Orange Club Podcast that while some allergies are persistent, others can be prevented, reduced, or even outgrown. The key is being proactive in how you manage them. Whether it’s adjusting your environment, changing certain habits, or avoiding specific triggers, taking action can make a real difference.

    Different Allergies, Different Outcomes

Airborne allergens like dust, pollen, and mold can often be managed through practical steps using air purifiers, keeping windows closed during high pollen days, and cleaning regularly to reduce dust and dander. Food allergies, however, are a different story. They can be harder to detect, especially if you’re unsure which food is causing the reaction. Testing is often the first step in identifying the exact trigger.

Some allergies are temporary, especially in children. Many kids born with allergies to milk, soy, or eggs can outgrow them as their immune system matures. This process can happen naturally over the years, allowing them to reintroduce those foods safely under medical supervision. However, not all food allergies go away. Dr. Bhalla points out that tree nut, peanut, and shellfish allergies tend to be long-lasting and, in some cases, lifelong. These particular allergens carry a higher risk of severe reactions, making strict avoidance essential.

Unlike seasonal allergies, food allergies can be life-threatening. Exposure to even a small amount of the allergen can cause a severe reaction known as anaphylaxis. That’s why, for certain foods, “waiting it out” isn’t an option; the safest path is complete avoidance.

    Final Takeaway

While some allergies fade over time, others require ongoing management or lifelong caution. Knowing the difference and working proactively with your doctor can help you prevent flare-ups and stay safe. In Episode 9 of The Orange Club Podcast - Are We All Becoming Allergic?, Dr. Gurmeet Bhalla shares why early detection, lifestyle adjustments, and medical guidance are key to beating allergies and living symptom-free.
