Why Peanut Allergies Are Rare in India?

    hero image

“Peanut allergies are one of the most common food allergies in the West but far less common in India.”

Dr. Gurmeet Bhalla, Allergist shares that researchers have been studying why second-generation Indians born abroad seem to develop more nut and peanut allergies than children born in India. While there’s no single answer yet, two main theories are gaining attention.

Watch the Clip: Why Peanut allergies are rare in India

    Hygiene Hypothesis and Early Exposure

The first is the hygiene hypothesis, which suggests that children growing up in more sterile environments with less exposure to dust, soil, farm animals, or everyday germs may miss out on early immune system training. This reduced exposure could make them more prone to allergies later in life.

The second theory is about early dietary exposure. In India, peanuts are often introduced into a child’s diet earlier during the weaning period, which may help the gut develop a tolerance. In contrast, children in the West are often introduced to peanuts later, potentially increasing the risk of allergic reactions.

Interestingly, even within India, patterns vary. Data suggests that children raised in large cities may have higher allergy rates compared to those in smaller towns and villages possibly due to lifestyle differences, diet, and environmental exposure.

    Final Takeaway

Peanut and nut allergies may be shaped by both environment and early life experiences. While the exact reasons remain under study, early exposure to certain foods and diverse environmental contact may help reduce allergy risks. In Episode 9 of The Orange Club Podcast - Are Allergies on the Rise?, Dr. Gurmeet Bhalla discusses these theories and why understanding regional differences can help guide prevention strategies.
