What is Alanine Aminotransferase ALT (SGPT) test?
ALT/SGPT is an enzyme produced exclusively by the liver. The enzyme is increased in the blood during any liver injury or abnormalities. High levels of SGPT are also seen in viral hepatitis, hepatotoxicity from drugs or toxins, alcoholic liver disease, hepatic ischemia, and malignant infiltration.
Why get the Alanine Aminotransferase ALT (SGPT) test?
The ALT/SGPT helps evaluate liver function and is also used to determine the underlying cause of liver problems. The ALT test is also a part of an initial screening for liver diseases.
