What is Aspartate Aminotransferase AST (SGOT) test?
The SGOT/AST is a liver enzyme that is usually measured to evaluate liver activity. It is also secreted by the heart and kidneys to a lesser extent. When liver cells are damaged, AST/SGOT leaks out into the bloodstream, elevating AST/SGOT levels in the blood. Mild to moderate elevations of AST/SGOT is seen in chronic liver diseases and short huge elevations seen in acute liver injury.

The AST/SGOT test is done to assess liver function, especially in the elderly and alcoholics. This test also helps to monitor liver function in those who take medications over long periods of time for various illnesses.
