What is Erthrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR) test?
An erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) is a type of blood test that measures how quickly erythrocytes (red blood cells) settle at the bottom of a test tube that contains a blood sample. Normally, red blood cells settle relatively slowly. A faster-than-normal rate may indicate inflammation in the body.
Why get the Erthrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR) test?
ESR test helps detect the presence of inflammation caused by one or more conditions such as infections, tumors, or autoimmune diseases. It also helps diagnose and monitor specific conditions such as temporal arteritis, systemic vasculitis, polymyalgia rheumatica, or rheumatoid arthritis.
