A ferritin test can help detect celiac disease indirectly by identifying iron deficiency caused by malabsorption. Low ferritin levels are common in untreated celiac disease due to intestinal damage, which impairs the absorption of nutrients, including iron. If low ferritin is accompanied by gastrointestinal symptoms, further testing, such as tissue transglutaminase antibody (tTG) testing or an intestinal biopsy, is recommended to confirm celiac disease.
