What is the relationship between TSH and T4 in a thyroid function test?

TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) and T4 (Thyroxine) have an inverse relationship in the thyroid function test. TSH is produced by the pituitary gland and stimulates the thyroid to produce T4. When T4 levels are low, the pituitary releases more TSH to stimulate thyroid hormone production, indicating hypothyroidism. Conversely, when T4 levels are high, TSH production decreases, which may suggest hyperthyroidism. Monitoring both TSH and T4 together provides a comprehensive view of thyroid function and helps in diagnosing conditions like thyroid dysfunction, Graves' disease, or Hashimoto's thyroiditis.
