This test compares the amount of protein to the amount of creatinine in a single urine sample. Healthy kidneys keep most protein in the blood, so a high ratio can be an early sign that the kidneys are leaking protein. The urine protein creatinine ratio measures protein loss in the urine using one sample, without needing a full day's urine collection. It is a convenient way to check kidney health.

Before the Test

• Tell your doctor if you have a urine infection, fever, or were doing heavy exercise, as these can raise protein temporarily.

• Avoid giving the sample during menstrual bleeding if possible.

• Fasting is not required.

During the Test

• A trained Orange Health Labs professional will collect your sample during the visit.

• Follow the instructions given to you at the time of collection.

• The sample is labelled and sent to the laboratory for testing.

• Let the collection team know if you feel unwell during the procedure.

It is recommended:

• To screen for or monitor kidney damage, especially in people with diabetes or high blood pressure.

• To check kidneys in pregnancy, including for conditions linked to high blood pressure.

• To follow up an abnormal urine dipstick result.

• To track kidney disease over time.

• It can be done at any time, often using an early morning urine sample. Your doctor will tell you if a specific timing is needed.
