What is the Beta-2 Glycoprotein 1 IgA Test?
The Beta-2 Glycoprotein 1 IgA Serum test is used to diagnose antiphospholipid syndrome by identifying beta-2 GP1 IgA antibodies. This Beta-2-glycoprotein I, also known as apolipoprotein H, inhibits the intrinsic coagulation pathway and is involved in the regulation of blood coagulation. Beta-2 glycoprotein 1 has been shown to be the primary autoantigen for anti-cardiolipin antibodies.
When is the Beta-2 Glycoprotein 1 IgA Test recommended?
It is recommended in:
Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS).
Also commonly used to diagnose the cause of recurrent miscarriages in women, deep vein thrombosis, and strokes.
The stroke, or transient ischemic attack (also known as TIA, or “mini-strokes”)
What does it measure?
The Beta-2 Glycoprotein 1 IgA test:
Analyzes the amount of a protein called beta-2 microglobulin (B2M) in the blood, urine, or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). B2M is a type of tumor marker. These tumor markers are substances that are made by cancer cells or by normal cells in response to cancer in the body.
The Anti-Beta-2 Glycoprotein, IgA, is associated with an increased risk of thromboembolic events, especially among patients with SLE. In elevated levels of Anti-Beta-2 glycoprotein, IgA may identify additional patients who have clinical features of antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) but who do not meet the current diagnostic criteria for APS.
