What is Microfilaria Detection (MF) test?
Filariasis is a parasitic disease. These are spread by blood-feeding insects such as black flies and mosquitoes. The embryos circulate in lymphatic tissues and blood as microfilaria leading to lymphangitis, lymphadenitis, elephantiasis, and tropical eosinophilia. The test detects the presence of microfilaria in the blood.
Why get the Microfilaria Detection (MF) test?
Microfilaria is the term used to refer to the larva of a certain parasitic nematode, i.e., filariae when it is still in an early larval stage. These parasites are released into the bloodstream of the host body by the adult parasites. As a result, these embryonic larvae are usually found in the blood of an infected person. This parasitic nematode, filariae, belongs to the family of Onchocercidae. And they are the cause behind the diseases such as elephantiasis, river blindness, Loa loa filariasis, and so on.
When is the Microfilaria (MF) Detection test recommended?
It is recommended in: Species that cause lymphatic filariasis have microfilariae levels that tend to peak at night, so it is recommended to collect samples between 10:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m. Its symptoms may include itching skin (pruritus), abdominal pain, chest pain, muscle pain (myalgias), and/or areas of swelling under the skin. The symptoms may also include an abnormally enlarged liver and spleen (hepatosplenomegaly) and inflammation in the affected organs.
What does it measure?
The Microfilaria (MF) Detection test measures:Microfilaria (Mf) in the blood after collecting the sample and making wet smears examined under the microscope. Usually, this microfilariae species is found at night between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m.Microfilaria species enter the bloodstream at night.Microfilaria detection provides definitive evidence of filarial infection. In addition, microfilariae size and morphology can be used to differentiate between different filarial species. The microfilariae of these filarial worms can be seen on conventional thick and thin blood films, which allows for their definitive identification under the microscope.
