What is a transferrin saturation test?

Transferrin saturation determines an individual’s iron status by using the ratio of serum iron concentration and total iron-binding capacity (TIBC) as a percentage. The transferrin saturation test tells us how much iron in the blood is bound to transferrin. A low transferrin saturation usually indicates an iron deficiency, while a high saturation often confirms hemochromatosis.

When is transferrin saturation recommended?

It is recommended:

  • In case of confirmed anaemia due to iron deficiency, which was detected in routine check-ups.

  • It is determined by iron deficiency or overload in the body.

  • To determine the capacity of the blood to transport iron.

  • If you have any signs or symptoms of iron deficiency anaemia, like pallor, fatigue, weakness, and headaches.

What does it measure?

The transferrin saturation test:

  • Is ordered along with other iron tests when results from a routine complete blood count (CBC) show that a person's haemoglobin and hematocrit are low and the red blood cells (RBCs) are smaller and paler than normal.

  • The iron studies test analyses three components, which include serum transferrin, iron serum, and total iron-binding capacity.

  • Most of the iron is obtained from food and converted into haemoglobin in the RBCs, as only a small quantity of iron is required by the body.

How long will the reports take?

You will get the reports within 6 hours after the collection of the blood sample.
