What is Triiodothyronine (T3) test?
Insufficient production of thyroid hormones T3 and T4 is known as hypothyroidism and overproduction is termed as hyperthyroidism or thyrotoxicosis. Estimation of Serum TSH along with T3 and T4 is useful for differentiating the primary thyroid disorders (from thyroid gland) from secondary thyroid disorders (from the pituitary gland). In primary hypothyroidism, TSH level is elevated but in secondary hypothyroidism, the TSH level is low.
Why get the Triiodothyronine (T3) test?
Estimation of T4 (thyroxine) and T3 (triiodothyronine) is the mainstay of the diagnosis of thyroid diseases. Both are decreased in hypothyroidism but increased in hyperthyroidism. When the results of T4 and T3 are borderline, free hormone levels FT3 and FT4 are estimated.
When is the Triiodothyronine (T3) test recommended?
It is recommended when there is a need:
To diagnose thyroid diseases (hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism).
To analyse the treatment of patients with thyroid diseases.
What does it measure?
The Triiodothyronine (T3) test measures: T3, it is a thyroid hormone that plays a major role in the body. Along with T4, another important thyroid hormone, T3 regulates the body’s metabolism, activates cells, and enables the functioning of vital organs.Triiodothyronine is referred to as T3 because this hormone has three iodine atoms that are attached to it. The other main thyroid hormone is thyroxine, or T4, which has four iodine atoms. Some of the T3 hormones that are circulating in your body are made by the thyroid. Most of it, however, starts as T4 and is converted in the blood into T3 by the removal of an iodine atom. Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) is a hormone that is secreted into the blood by a gland present in the brain (pituitary gland) that tells your thyroid gland to make and release the thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) into your blood.
