What is the Cytomegalovirus (CMV) Avidity IgG test?
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a common virus that can be spread through the bodily fluids of infected people. The Cytomegalovirus Avidity IgG test is used to evaluate past or present CMV infections. This test analyzes the antibodies produced by the immune system in response to a CMV infection.
When is the Cytomegalovirus (CMV) Avidity IgG test recommended?
It is recommended:Specially for pregnant women who may have been infected by CMV and are at risk of passing the infection to the baby through the placenta. This infection may cause serious health issues in the baby, who may develop hearing or vision problems, seizures, pneumonia, jaundice, and anemia.Upon the observation of symptoms such as fatigue, sore throat, fever, headache, and muscle aches, especially in pregnant women, newborn babies with abnormalities, and people with weak immune systems.
What does it measure?
The Cytomegalovirus (CMV) Avidity IgG test: Aids in discriminating recent from past CMV infections, particularly in pregnant women. Women who are infected with CMV after conception are much more likely to transmit the infection to the baby compared to women who were already infected (i.e., have circulating CMV IgG antibodies) at the time of conception. Unfortunately, less than 5% of women undergo pre-conception screening for CMV antibodies, so their CMV antibody status becomes known only when they are tested due to concerns about the fetus. If a mother is positive for both CMV IgG and IgM infections, it is very important to perform CMV IgG avidity testing to determine if the positive antibody results represent whether there may be a recent (after conception) infection or more likely a past (before conception) infection.
