What is the Beta-2 Glycoprotein 1 IgM Test?
The Beta-2 Glycoprotein 1 IgM serum test analyzes the presence of beta-2 glycoprotein antibodies in the blood. These antibodies are also known as antiphospholipid antibodies. They are known to target the body’s own phospholipids (lipid proteins) and platelets.
When is the Beta-2 Glycoprotein 1 IgM Test recommended?
It is recommended in:Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) This is mainly ordered along with other tests such as cardiolipin antibody and lupus anticoagulantAlso commonly used to diagnose the cause of recurrent miscarriages in women, deep vein thrombosis, and strokes.
What does it measure?
The Beta-2 Glycoprotein 1 IgM test: Analyzes and measures one or more classes (IgG, IgM, or very rarely, IgA) of beta-2 glycoprotein 1 antibodies. Beta-2 glycoprotein 1 antibody is a protein c-factor that binds to phospholipids. These phospholipids are lipid-proteins that are found in the outermost layer of cells (cell membrane), including blood cells such as platelets. In the anti-phospholipid syndrome (APS), autoantibodies are produced that target phospholipid and its co-factors such as B2GP1.The Beta-2 Glycoprotein antibodies are used to assess the risk of thrombosis in patients who may be at risk for antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). This test should not be used alone for screening for APS but should be used in conjunction with cardiolipin antibodies and other coagulation tests.
