What Counts as ‘Normal’ Period Pain?
It’s common for young girls, especially before childbirth, to experience mild pain during menstruation. One or two days of cramps at the start of the cycle are generally not a cause for concern. This happens because of natural uterine contractions and hormonal changes. Mild pain can often be managed with a hot water bag, gentle stretching, or over-the-counter medication, and doesn’t usually interfere with day-to-day activities.
Red Flags You Shouldn’t Ignore During Periods
Period pain becomes a red flag when it starts to affect daily life. If cramps are so severe that a girl misses school, college, or work, it should not be ignored. Pain accompanied by nausea, vomiting, or diarrhoea can also be a sign of something more serious, such as endometriosis or other reproductive health conditions. Recognising these warning signs early is key to preventing long-term discomfort.
How Do You Know It’s Time for Medical Help?
If pain is intense, recurring, or requires frequent medication, it’s best to seek professional advice. Doctors often start with an ultrasound to understand the root cause, whether it’s hormonal imbalance, fibroids, or other conditions. As Dr. Usha advises, if you find yourself taking more than two pain pills in a month or regularly pausing your routine due to period pain, it’s time to consult a specialist.
Breaking the Silence Around Menstrual Health
Normalizing conversations around menstrual health can make it easier for young girls to seek help without hesitation. Guidance from parents, teachers, and peers is essential in breaking taboos and reassuring them that severe period pain is not something they must “just live with.” With timely medical care and awareness, menstrual pain can be effectively managed, allowing girls to focus on their education, career, and overall well-being.
